Proposal on Parallelism and Paradox

In class, we read many stories about creation and Psalms that contain a paradox or parallelism. A paradox shows a similar meaning between two opposite ideas or a contradiction that are both true. A paradox is also supposed to be relate to life and help us understand the meaning of two opposite things that are related by their meanings. There are three types of parallelism. All three types help us relate to the deep meaning of stories. We can relate better to the stories and compare to real life senarios. There are many ways in which paradox and parallelism are similar. After making the previous statement, my proposal is that a paradox and parallelism are similar in the way that they both connect thoughts together and they try to show us deeper meanings in life.

A paradox and parallelism connect many thoughts and ideas together within the Psalms and creation stories. A paradox may link two different meanings together with one thing, but it still helps explain how one idea can have so many different perspectives. It shows you that certain phrases or things can be viewed differenty and it all depends on how you view it. Parallelism also connects many thought through different ways. There are lines that are connected through structure or antithesis. The same ideas are expanded upon through different ways within two lines of a poem or story.

The second example is that a paradox and parallelism also show us the deeper meaning of stories. Most stories, such as the Psalms and the creation stories, show us the most important meanings in life. They teach us a lesson in many ways. A paradox can show us how something in life can have more than one meaning and yet still be correct. Parallelism shows us that even through multiple lines, you can find many hidden meanings about life that help us learn how to live. These stories contain a paradox and parallelism to help us understand these deep meanings in life and even though a paradox and parallelism are different, they have the same effects on how we percieve things.

"When We Two Parted" by Lord Byron

The first line that I found interesting was when he says "when we two parted in silence and tears." This line reminded me of my middle school. When I graduated from middle school, no one wanted to cry, but as soon as we walked out the doors to say goodbye to everyone for the last time, everyone broke down in tears. All the girls were crying and the guys were silent. The guys could not cry because it was not the "cool thing" to do at that time. Deep inside, everyone was sad and never wanted to part from eachother. When you are very close to people, it is hard to leave them and most people deal with it by either crying or trying to keep their emotions inside by being silent.

The line that stuck out to me the most was when he states that "they vows are all broken." My first thoughts were that she died and she broke the vows from marraige that say "til death do us part." I thought that the woman died because the poem says that her cheeks grow pale and cold. The only vow that I can think of that would fit in with this would be that because she died, she broke the vow that she made to him when they got married.

The last line of the poem, "If I should meet thee after long years, how should I greet thee?", reminds me or a reunion. The poem starts off talking about when people part ways and ends by talking about meeting again. I think that when you see someone for the first time after not seeing them for a long period of time, things between the two of you are awkward. Neither one of you know what to say to each other. Sometimes you feel that a person probably has changed since the last time that you have seen each other. The man doesn't know what to say to his wife again because he hasn't seen her in a very long time. So he says that he would greet ehr with silence and tears, just like the way that they left each other.

The Campus in Wartime

I chose the line "the young seek books or booze to soften the ache". This part of the poem reminds me that people go to other physical things to ease the pain of heartaches. Some younger adults choose to drink alcohol and do drugs rather than coming to reality that these things will not change what happened. They feel that since the drugs or alcohol makes them feel good at that moment, then if they do it every time something goes wrong, their lives would be a lot better.

The people that think that drugs and alcohol can make things better are very wrong. Drugs and alcohol only ease the pain for that moment, but the effects are still present no matter what you do. The only way that you can confront pain is to deal with it and maybe talk things out. The men in this poem resort to "booze" to ease the pain of seeing the dead bodies, but when the effects of the alcohol wear off, the bodies will still be there. Getting drunk will not change the fact that there are still many people dying every second. These people are just avoiding the realities of life.

I also did the line "three thousand of ours and thousands of theirs are too many body bags to bury in the mind". I think that this line is showing you how war can affect your life. There are thousands of people that die. Not only are there thousands of their people, but there are also thousands of our people that die everyday that there is a war. Even though you do not know the "enemy" people that you are fighting against, you are taking a human life away. Once you see a dead body, I don't think that the image can disappear very easily. I just believe that this poem explains what can happen during a wartime and what people try to do to get things that they've seen out of their minds.

"Sonnet" by Billy Collins

In this poem by Billy Collins, the line that stuck out to me the most was "Blow out the candles and come at last to bed. Patriarch was writing so much that his wife asked him to basically stop writing and go to bed. It seems like she was getting annoyed and aggravated that he kept writing and spent more attention on the things that he was writing instead of on her. She seems to be a person who got jealous that she got less attention.

It seems like writing is something that this man loves to do. When you love to do something so much, it is hard to just stop and go do something else. It is like when your mother tells you to stop doing something and go eat dinner, it is hard because you don't even want to take a break. I can relate to this man. Although I don't like to read, I do like to write stories and I understand how hard it is to stop when someone tells you too.

I feel like the man's wife doesn't respect his decision to write or read like he does. She seems to want all that attention that her husband is giving to the book. I don't think that this relationship would work because if she doesn't respect something that he loves to do, then why would Patriarch want to stay with her? If Patriarch is spending way too much time on his work, then I would understand why the woman feels that his work is taking over too much of his time and maybe he should just take a break.

The Summer Day by Mary Oliver

In this poem by Mary Oliver, it talks about a woman who seems to question everything about her life. She wants to know who made the world and what she should do with her life. She realizes that life is too short to sit around and do nothing with it. She wants to live her life to the fullest and so in the end she won't have to live with regret or ask herself, "Why didn't I?" or tell herself, "I should have done....". She knows that life will go so fast that she doesn't want to miss out on anything.

The woman in this poem also seems like she is confused about what she is here on Earth and what she was put here to do. She seems like a religious person and she knows that God put here on this planet for a reason and she feels bad that she can't figure out what that reason is. She isn't sure what she is supposed to do with her life and that bothers her because she wants to live her life to the fullest, but that is hard to do if she doesn't know what she's on Earth to do.

The woman was holding an insect in her hand. Most women get really nervous when an insect is near them, never mind in their hand. This shows how much this woman enjoys life. She isn't afraid to try anything new or take life for granted like most people do. She takes each slow summer day one at a time and enjoys it for what it's worth because one day she won't be here anymore and she doesn't want to miss out.

Jet by Tony Hoagland

This poem had a lot of imagery in it. The man compared a lot of random things with a different meaning. It talks about things like a big sky river and crickets who plug in their appliances. There is no river in the sky and crickets can't plug in appliances. So this poem is not very realistic, but it gives off a sense of the different views that people can have about the world. Imagination can make a simple action seem like an adventure.

I feel that the man who is writing this is drunk. He talks about drinking jet fuel, but I don't think any person would want to drink jet fuel for fun. I think that the man likes to drink alcohol because it helps him escape from the problems of life. He seems to enter another world created by his imagination. In his own world, he can make anything that he wants to encounter actually happen.

When he talks about remembering the bright unbroken planet, I think that he is finally realizing that he has to get back to reality. The alcohol cannot take away from the reality of the world that he is living in. He says that he is amazed at how hurt he is, and I think that he is talking about the obstacles that life can throw at you. It seems like the author is realizing that he wants to feel like he is free, but the only way that he can gain that feeling is to drink and not return to the reality of his life.
Y Just to make sure this works. =]
